Hidden Figures Young Readers’ Edition
Margot Shetterly
I’m continuing to listen to audio books from Libro.fm. Hidden Figures was perfect for me—it’s a book I wanted to read, and the young readers’ edition, which is shorter than the adult book, worked well for my short hops in the car. The “hidden figures” are the African American women mathematicians who worked as human computers for NASA in the early days of the space program. The book does an excellent job of laying out the culture of the United States at the time, explaining racism and sexism matter of factly yet clearly. I missed the movie when it was in Park Rapids, but I’m hoping to catch it elsewhere. If you’re like me, it’s always better to read (or listen to!) the book before seeing the movie.
Here’s the trailer.

Wink Poppy Midnight
April Genevieve Tucholke
From the very first sentence I was hooked on this book, as I love when a book has an attention getting first line. Wink is a social outcast with many siblings and a penchant for storytelling. Poppy is a popular, seemingly perfect girl but she's not as nice as her appearance would suggest. Midnight is Poppy's longtime friend who is in love with her; she gets used by Poppy because of this not-so-secret crush. These three character's stories entwines when Midnight is moved to a house in the country where his neighbor is Wink. As Midnight and Wink become close and a relationship blooms, Poppy gets jealous because Wink has lost interest in her. Poppy plots revenge but her scheme doesn't go as planned...
