Pansies at Beagle and Wolf

At last—spring has come to Park Rapids!

The snow in front of the store is finally gone, and we’ve dared to put pansies in our baskets. Best of all, snowbirds and summer people are coming back, and we’re so glad to welcome them!

Indie Bookstore Roadmap

Our trade association put together a cool road map showing all the Indie bookstores in our region. We’re giving it away—you’ll love looking at it, plus the back has a number of special offers.

Children’s Book Week

April 30 to May 6

Fostering a love of reading is one of the most important things you can do for the children in your life. This week, make a particular effort to read to them, and encourage them to read to you. Attend a story time in your area. Plan an outing to a library or bookstore. Pick up the official poster (pictured) at Beagle and Wolf, while supplies last. And did we mention read together?

bookbookSummer Book Groups

Book groups are the heart of Beagle and Wolf, and we’re excited about our summer schedule! All our groups are open, and welcome visitors and/or new members.

May 16, 10:00, interested members of the Sister Wolf Women’s Group will meet on the lower level of the store to pick books for the summer. Bring suggestions—better yet email, and she’ll try to have copies of any books you suggest. We’re looking for books recently out in paperback, around 300 pages, and discussable.

bookbookMay 23, 10:00, the Sister Wolf Women’s group will have its first meeting of the year! We’ll meet on the lower level of the store to discuss When Books Went to War.  See Sally’s review of the book.

The Beagle Women’s Group will meet during the summer this year! They meet the third Monday of the month at 5:30.

The "Sort of Shakespeare" Book Group will resume meeting in June.

The Beagle Men’s Group and Current Issues Group will continue to meet on their regularly scheduled dates.

Phyllis Root and Kelly Povo
May 26, noon

If you’re like us, you enjoy wildflowers when you’re hiking or biking. And like us, you may not always know what you’re looking at. A beautiful new guidebook can help! Searching for Minnesota's Native Wildflowers will be released on May 15, and author Phyllis Root and photographer Kelly Povo will be with us May 26 to talk about the book and sign copies of it. You’ll want to arrive at 12:00 to hear their interesting and informative talk. That will give you all afternoon to look for wildflowers!

The Recovering

Leslie Jamison

A deeply personal and seamless blend of memoir, cultural history, literary criticism, and journalistic reportage, The Recovering turns the traditional addiction narrative on its head, demonstrating that the story of recovery can be every bit as electrifying as the train wreck itself.

Great American Outpost
Maya Rao

Maya Rao is a journalist who embedded herself in the surreal American frontier of the Bakken oil field. With an eye for the dark, humorous, and absurd, she chronicles the largest oil boom since 1968, and the people who were left behind wondering what happened to the good times and if they will ever return.

Donald Morrill

If your mother decided to write about the details of her life, would you read her account? Jill Lundgrove does just that, and her children don’t know what to make of it. They consider destroying her pages, for in them they find an account of their family blended by death and divorce, tested by illness and drug addiction, and unevenly duct-taped with their mother’s love.

bookDear Girl,
Amy K. Rosethal and Paris Rosenthal

Written by mother-daughter duo Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Paris Rosenthal, Dear Girl, is a perfect book for the special girl in your life. Dear Girl, encourages girls to always be themselves and to love who they are—inside and out.
