Run Away with Me
Brian Selznick
Brian Selznick, the masterful illustrator and storyteller of many of my favorite
childhood books, returns with his YA debut set in 1986.
Danny is spending a couple of months in Rome while his mother works on
restoring and deciphering an old artifact. During his exploration of the city,
Danny meets Angelo through a note left in the crevice of a statue and a
whirlwind summer romance blossoms between them. I am not typically a
romance reader but I was blown away by the beauty of the writing, the
detailed illustrations, and the lovable characters.

I Am the Swarm
Hayley Chewins
Like it has for all the women in her family, Nell's magic manifests on her fifteenth birthday. Each person's ability is unique--Nell's emotions are
anthropomorphized by various insects that appear whenever her mood shifts,
her mother's age changes at random, and her sister Mora bleeds music.
Nell doesn't cope well with her magical trait, especially despising the wasps
that swarm when she is angry. After a series of attempts to numb her emotions,
Nell grows towards accepting her differences and those of her family
members. This beautifully composed YA novel in verse weaves a perfect
metaphor by using inherited magical traits to represent mental illness and trauma passed down through family lineage.

Sing a Song of Popcorn:
Every Child’s Book of Poems
Compiled by Beatrice Schenk de Regniers
Illustrated by nine Caldecott Medal artists
Oxford Book of Poetry for Children
Compiled by Edward Blishen, Illustrated by Brian Wildsmith
It’s been going on 40 years since my daughter started getting books as gifts
from friends and family: these are two examples. When I look back at those
precious years and think about our favorites, books of poetry have a special
place in my heart.Reading aloud works so well with poetry, and a book with
lots of short options is perfect at bedtime.
I am especially fond of Sing of Song of Popcorn. The poems are so beautifully
illustrated, and they are gathered into topics that help you find the right poems
to fit the mood of the moment.

No, these books aren’t still in print: but Jen would be happy to find a copy for
you! And there are wonderful books of poetry coming out now!
