colored pencilsDiversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Beagle and Wolf Books & Bindery

Dismantling DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) policies and practices has been a recent thrust of the Federal government.

We at Beagle and Wolf Books are not following suit. We remain committed to the idea that having books on diverse topics by diverse authors is an important part of our mission. We invite diverse authors to participate in events in the store. We have a diverse staff and sponsor four diverse book groups which are open to all. We want to provide a space where all who enter feel seen and safe. If you’d like to discuss this stance, email me at Sally@beagleandwolf.com.

We love Independent Bookstore Day! Indies across the country will all be celebrating on the 26th, each in their own way. We always celebrate the day as the birthday of Beagle and Wolf Books & Bindery (ten years since we combined Sister Wolf Books and Beagle Books and Bindery!)

Jennifer's 50th Birthday logoThis year, we’ll be celebrating another birthday as well—Jen’s 50th!!! (And we have permission to say so.) Stop in to wish her well, have a birthday cupcake, and check out what else is going on in the store that day!

Selina Li Bi will sign copies of Sunlight Playing Over a Mountain, which will be released early this month. Selina’s magical debut perfectly portrays the pain of growing up in aless-than-magical world and introduces a remarkable new voice in young adult fiction.

Coming at the very end of April……..April 29th...

For a Girl Becoming
Joy Harjo, illustrated by Adriana Garcia

I’m pretty sure there’s magic in Joy Harjo. Her forthcoming book, For a Girl Becoming was written in anticipation of her granddaughter Krista’s birth. It is in picture book format but don’t be fooled, this is a book for everyone…..if children want to read it, fine, but it’s for all of us. Poet/magician Joy Harjo speaks to Krista from the moment her spirit arrived and looks forward to her future. She speaks of how much Krista is loved and some of what she can expect when she arrives. She tells Krista of all the gifts that await her. She warns of grief. In a practical moment, she advises: “Clean your room.” Paired with Harjo’s loving and welcoming words are the breathtaking illustrations of Adriana Garcia—before even opening the book, the cover art demonstrates the illustrator’s resonance with Harjo’s message. I’d describe the artwork to you, but just look at this cover. A picture is worth thousand words, I’ve heard. ;)

Baking for Two

book coverWelcome to cookbook corner! Last month I reviewed Cooking for Two.

And this month I’m focusing on its companion book (drum roll), Baking for Two.

Let’s add to that romantic dinner with bread or better yet, with  dessert.

Okay, okay it doesn't have to be a romantic dinner. Maybe you just don't like leftovers. I know, weird, but maybe you love to cook. New menus every night. Variety is the spice of life, as they say.

Baking for Two has everything from scones to prosciutto and gruyere croissants to tarts and pound cakes and pizzas to fresh tortillas, both corn and flour. It contains great pictures, nutritional information, and conversions. Both cookbooks let you cook in small batches. If you got the first one, complete the set. It will be worth it!
