LiBerate: #SetBooksFreeBanned Books Week
September 22 to 28

Beagle and Wolf Books & Bindery will join bookstores, libraries, and other institutions across the country to celebrate Banned Books Week this month. We’ll have a display of banned books set up, and we guarantee you’ll be surprised by some of the books on it. Calls for book bans have exploded in the past year. We stand against this kind of censorship.

Resisting book bans is about liberation. It’s about liberation for schools and libraries from the rash of book challenges that has exploded since 2021. It means liberating the more than 4,240 titles that have been challenged since 2021. It entails liberation for literary institutions who carry books that represent marginalized groups, especially books by people of color and LGBTQ+ people that have been disproportionately censored by book bans. And of course, it’s about liberation for independent bookstores, who offer their communities access to diverse literature and for that have been targeted in book ban legislation. Literature and liberation are inseparable.

Come in, browse our display of banned books, talk with us about why we oppose banning books, and pick up a sticker, bookmark, and button to proclaim your own opposition to book banning.

Art Leap 2024
Art Leap

September 28 and 29

Art Leap, an annual open studio event, introduces regional artists to visitors interested in learning more about their artwork, the creative process and how artists are often inspired by their natural surroundings. Many studios and sites host guest artists and offer demonstrations and music. This year’s 28 sites will feature more than 100 artists skilled in a variety of artistic expression: sculptures, paintings, mixed media, pottery, photography, mosaics, wood and metal work, fiber and paper arts, jewelry, beading and other Native American cultural art.

Hop from studio to studio, learn process, appreciate skill and support the artists. Let fall’s natural beauty inspire you as it does the artists while you pass spectacular lakes and travel country roads.

Hard copies of the Art Leap brochure are available around town; a digital version is here.

Signs, Music
Raymond Antrobus

One of the most interesting and talented living poets of our time is Raymond Antrobus, born in England to an English mother and Jamaican father. Raymond is also deaf. His newest book will be out September 17, Signs, Music. This book is essentially one long poem broken into two parts: before and after the birth of the author and his wife's child. The before section is titled Towards Naming and the after section is titled The New Father. The first section is filled with the emotions of most expecting parents—anticipation and nervousness. Additionally, the author worries about being a better father than his own alcoholic father was. Like Antrobus's other books, he does not hide or shy from his deafness, and shares the signage for his own name, Raymond (the letter "r" that rises into a burst that is the sign for light, shower, sunrays) as well as others. The poems are tender and showcase the best of what humans can do with parenthood. This is a collection a reader can consume in one sitting. And then repeat.

Appetite for Change
Beth Dooley

Welcome back to Cookbook Corner, this month featuring a Minnesota cookbook, Appetite for Change

Feeding the soul is what Appetite for Change does, working to improve the foodscape in its Northside community, including through the Breaking Bread Café in Minneapolis. This cookbook shares both enticing recipes and heartfelt stories of sustenance. It’s filled with soul food classics that feature light twists and local touches and show how multiple cultures can commingle within one cookbook—and even one plate. Looking for some great soulful recipes? This is it! From Purple Rain Salad to peach cobbler! (Especially for those of you that got the Lions Club peaches! Pay attention!)

This cookbook has ethnic diversity mixed with vegetarian recipes and southern hospitality. It even has a Minnesota chicken wild rice soup recipe. Healthy, affordable, easy, and delicious! This is one fun cookbook with a local flair. Check it out.
