As Long As the Lemon Trees Grow
Zoulfa Katouh

This work of historical fiction tells the story of Salama Kassab, a young woman living in Syria. Salama, previously trained as a pharmacist, is a volunteer at the hospital, doing whatever she can to help save lives due to the violence in her country. Many of her family members are dead or are in prison. Salama must decide whether to flee to the safety of another country with her pregnant sister-in-law, Layla, or remain in Syria. As Long  As the Lemon Trees Grow raises awareness of the losses and atrocities endured by the people of Syria, as well as the sense of hope that remains. This powerful Young Adult novel is recommended for ages 14 and up.

Farmhouse
Sophie Blackall

Farmhouse tells the story of a hiker who happens upon an old farmhouse. The hiker imagines life in the farmhouse long ago. She imagines a house filled with activity, busy parents, and twelve children. She sees children doing barn chores and house chores. In her mind, they are making hay and picking apples. The children grow up and leave the farm to live their own lives. No one lives in the house anymore, but the family has left behind many possessions. These treasures inspired the hiker to tell the story of this family and their home. The result is Farmhouse by two-time Caldecott Medalist Sophie Blackall. This lovely picture book inspires me to ask friends and relatives about their stories. After all, as the author reminds us, when we share our stories, we help keep them alive.
