Shaking Things Up:
14 Young Women Who Changed the World

Susan Hood

Written in poetic form, this book showcases 14 young girls/women. These 14 girls rose above their circumstances and did great things which impacted the world around them. My favorite part of the books is that the girls are from around the world; many I had not heard of before. Another fun take on the book is that 13 different women did the illustrations.

Neck & Neck
Elise Parsley

Leopoldo the giraffe lives at the zoo and is adored by his fans. They show their love for him by feeding Leopold snacks throughout the day. One day, though, a rival comes along and threatens Leopold’s adoration. I loved this story and had to purchase a copy for my classroom. Every day we have many opportunities to impact the people around us. Life is about choices. This must read and the choice Leopold makes at the end will surprise you!

Every Day
David Levithan

“A” (a genderless soul) wakes up in a different body every morning and lives that person's life for one day. They have no control over who they wake up as, they only know that the host will be close to their age and location. A has lived like this for sixteen years and has never allowed themself to get attached to a host or their loved ones, until they meet Rhiannon. Rhiannon changes everything, making A want a future for the first time in their life, but can an ordinary person learn to love someone who is ever-changing? This book does a fantastic job tackling the idea of whether or not love is tied to appearance with a genderless character at the forefront.

Mara struggles between not believing her brother could do such an awful thing and knowing that Hannah would never lie about a serious crime. Sides are drawn and Mara feels trapped in the middle. Should she stick by her friend or her family?

Light Filters In: Poems
Caroline Kaufman

This is not necessarily a young adult book, but it is one I think could be helpful to those in high school. The author writes about her own problems in a way that is sad but hopeful, and is in the same vein as poets like Rupi Kaur. This collection is broken up into four sections, each one showing the progression of depression and heartbreak. It does end on a hopeful note though, “I turned the dirt and mud into soil, and grew.”
