Kathy has written a fascinating book about homesteading on the Hubbard Prairie, based on journals kept by Mary Blunt. Mary was the great-grandmother of Kathy’s husband, John. You’ll enjoy talking to Kathy about Evergreen Home and getting a signed copy.
Children’s Book Week May 6 to 12
The theme of this year’s Children’s Book Week is "Reading is Magic," which celebrates the power of reading stories to transport minds. The week encourages children to be curious about the world around them. There’s even a jingle for it!
We have Children’s Book Week posters to give away (while supplies last).

When it's July—Where’s Waldo?
We’re doing Find Waldo Local again!!!!!!
YAY!!!!!!
This is one of Park Rapids’ favorite summer activities—during the month of July, Waldo will be hiding in a number of PR businesses such as retail shops, art galleries, the Chamber of Commerce and the library. Get a Find Waldo passport, find Waldo in participating businesses and get your passport stamped at each business. When you get 10 stamps, you’ll instantly be rewarded with a small prize (while supplies last) and if you get most of the passport stamped, you’ll be eligible to win the GRAND PRIZE which includes a gift from each participating business—spoiler, the gift from us is a BUNCH of Waldo books! Also, if you’re lucky, you’ll spot a live Waldo and his sidekick Wenda wandering around town
William Kent Krueger August 16, 5:00 to 7:00
William Kent Krueger’s new Cork O’Connor book, Spirit Crossing, will be out August 20—but he’s gotten permission from his publisher to visit a few stores, including ours, in northern Minnesota before that date.
We’ll be hosting him in the Event Room (in the former J&B)
1104 Park Ave S Suite 2.
Check back for more information as plans progress.

August—Reading Road Trip
We had so much fun with the Reading Road Trip last summer that we’re doing it again and expanding it to the whole month of August! Grab a friend or members of your book group and visit these five great stores: Beagle and Wolf Books & Bindery, Big Pine Books (formerly The Willow), Bluebird Books, Cherry Street Books, and Four Pines Bookstore. Get a passport at your first stop, have it stamped at each store, and it will go in a drawing for a fabulous gift basket of books. Each store will have special activities. Check back for complete details (and our updated logo!)
Registration Now Open for Fall Reading Retreats! October 11 to 13 and 25 to 27
Our fall retreats are a chance to get away for a relaxing weekend, talking about books with a great group of women and eating food someone else has prepared, all at a leisurely pace. We’ll all read the same three books around the theme Finding Her Voice. The books will be Gilded Mountain, How to Say Babylon, and The Brightest Star. Gilded Mountain is in the store now. The other two books will be released in paperback in July.
Identical retreats will be held October 11 to 13 and 25 to 27. The second retreat is full, with a waiting list, but there is still space available for the first weekend.
The cost of the retreat will be $395.00. We encourage you to register now with a $100 deposit. (Non-refundable unless we fill your spot.) There is no charge to place your name on the waiting list for the second week-end.

As part of Independent Bookstore Day on April 27, we hosted poets from the League of Minnesota Poets. This group was established “to make Minnesota poetry conscious,” and they succeeded beautifully! The six visiting poets read from the group’s anthology, Agates, as well as other poetry. Copies of Agates, as well as Laura Hansen’s work, are available in the store.
Joy of Cooking
Welcome to Cookbook Corner! For those expecting a local cookbook, I will have to disappoint you. It's getting to be gift giving season, with weddings and graduations! I recommend Joy of Cooking! This is a beginner’s book if I ever saw one, with tried-and-true favorites to new favorites! This is one of my main go-to books, with nearly 90 years of development. It’s been updated to include vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free recipes. It’s great for gift giving, as well as for your own kitchen. I highly recommend it.
