The Barren Grounds
David Robertson

Morgan and Eli are indigenous children who have been separated from their culture and their families of origin. They are trying to adjust to school and their new foster home. In the attic of their new home, they discover a passageway to another reality. This portal leads to the land of Missewa.

In Missewa, Morgan and Eli meet a fisher named Ochek and Arik, a sassy squirrel. Together, the group heads out on a mission to save Missewa from starvation and the icy cold of winter. Readers join Morgan and Eli as they embrace their indigenous culture and navigate the challenges of adjusting to their new home and school. The Barren Grounds is recommended for Middle School readers. It is the first book in Robertson's new series, which has been compared to The Chronicles of Narnia. Fantasy fans will not want to miss The Barren Grounds.

The Dog that Nino Didn’t Have
Edward Van De Vendel, illustrated by Anton Van Hertbruggen

This treasure of a book will certainly hit home with anyone who has or has had an imaginary friend. It’s a picture book, with a touching story woven into a warm blanket of inspired, memorable artwork, and is one to be appreciated on many levels. It’s a book that is a treat for the eye, offering many subtle images that will give the story reader plenty of opportunity to invite the lap sitting listener to look for all the imaginary creatures, as well as the “real” ones. It is a book filled with hope, real emotion and situations, without being “mushy.”

There is a good reason this book was selected as the Society of Illustrators “The Original Art” Annual Exhibition Silver Medalist and named one of the Best Books of the Year by the Huffington Post and Publishers Weekly.

You should get this book, even if only to read it yourself. I gifted copies and plan to keep one for myself.

Doris
Lo Cole

Doris is a red elephant but does NOT want to be noticed! On every page, the reader sees Doris running to the next page, often a place where she can blend in and not be noticed. This will resonate with children and adult readers alike, sometimes we just want to get lost in the crowd! Once Doris becomes completely camouflaged, she decides maybe it's ok to be seen. The text is spare and fun—for example, is an elephant hidden in a bunch of finches an elephant or ele-finch? The bright colors are just right. I can't wait to read this for storytime and press it into the hands of every customer who has a child in his/her life.

Note: this book will be released March 5.
