PBS is going to host a story time at Beagle and Wolf!
Friday, February 16, 10:00

Each child will get a free copy of the book to take home! After the reading, we’ll see a video, a Molly of Denali episode that corresponds with the book we read. Kids will get stickers and PBS KIDS coloring pages and worksheets. Also, there will be a 4-foot tall Molly Character Cut Out that kids can take pictures with.

The event is free and open to the public. Join us!

Construction Update

The big news at the store these days is the construction of an addition! It will be a room at the back of the store, used primarily for book group meetings and receiving. The work is running ahead of schedule—can you believe that? and we’re very excited. The pictures below show the progress thus far.

Report from Afternoon In

A lively group of readers joined us on January 21! Jen and Sally introduced the group to 20 books we think would be good for book group discussion or individual reading. The line-up is pictured here. Jen and Sally will be sharing their reviews of the books this month and next.

Registration Now Open for Fall Reading Retreats!

October 11 to 13 and 25 to 27

Our fall retreats are a chance to get away for a relaxing weekend, talking about books with a great group of women and eating food someone else has prepared, all at a leisurely pace. We’ll all read the same three books. Our theme will be Finding Her Voice. Book titles will be announced later.

Identical retreats will be held October 11-13 and 25-27. Last year’s retreats filled up very quickly, and we had a waiting list.

The cost of the retreat will be $395.00. We encourage you to register now with a $100 deposit. (Non-refundable unless we fill your spot.)

A History of Half-Birds
Caroline Harper New

Back in June of 2023, we announced in our poetry column: “Caroline Harper New won the 2023 Ballard Spahr Prize for Poetry for her poetry collection, A History of Half-Birds, selected by Maggie Smith. New will receive $10,000 and her book will be published by Milkweed Editions in January 2024.”

Well, the time has come, and the book is available!

And it is magnificent.

Nature + science + poetry = Fabulous poems by Caroline Harper New

My own interests lean towards the humanities rather than the sciences, so I’m more surprised than anyone that I’m so taken with a book that has so many mentions of the word “Fieldnotes.”

The opening poem in A History of Half-Birds is called “The Elephant Mother”—a piece about a woman who chose to pursue birthing an elephant sanctuary (rather than the traditional birthing of human children) and from there, the stage is set, and the reader is treated to a collection of thoughtful poems that intertwine nature and humanity.

For a flavor of the poems in this collection, click here to read “Widdershins.”

Other recently released poetry collections that are worthy of your attention include:

Smoke on the Waterfront

book coverPhoto of deliSmoke on the Waterfront is a new cookbook based on the offerings of Northern Water Smokehaus in Duluth, Minnesota.

The cookbook is divided into seasons, with recipes appropriate for each. For example, the Spring section has lighter fare while Winter has recipes for brazing and roasting large cuts of meat. I love the handy way the cookbook breaks down recipes for home use.

The cookbook is very well rounded. In addition to covering smoking, it includes pasta sides, sandwiches, and bread. It includes everything you love about the Northern Water Smokehaus. If you know and love this place, the cookbook is not to be missed. And if you haven’t visited the Smokehaus yet, it may be your new hotspot. Check it out—and then use the cookbook to make the dishes you loved eating there.

And as a bonus, the book has been shortlisted for the Minnesota Book Awards in the general nonfiction category!
