Banned Books week is an annual celebration of the freedom to read. Since 1982, this annual event has highlighted the freedom to seek and to express ideas and emphasized the importance of the fight against censorship. It draws attention to national and local efforts to remove or restrict access to books in libraries, schools, and bookstores. This year, Banned Book Week is more timely than ever before. Like you, we have watched the proliferation of challenges to books across the country with concern.
Between January 1 and August 31, 2023, the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom documented challenges to 1,915 unique titles nationwide. This reflects a 20 percent increase in the number of book challenges recorded during the same reporting period in 2022.
We have a display of banned books set up at the front of the store. Take some time to see what books are included; we think you’ll be surprised by some of them. Visit with our staff about the issue of banning books, and why we feel strongly about it. Read a banned book. Think about how the Freedom to Read has been important in your life.
LeVar Burton is the honorary chair of Banned Books Week ’23 and says, “Books bring us together. They teach us about the world and each other. The ability to read and access books is a fundamental right and a necessity for life-long success. But books are under attack. They’re being removed from libraries and schools. Shelves have been emptied because of a small number of people and their misguided efforts toward censorship. Public advocacy campaigns like Banned Books Week are essential to helping people understand the scope of book censorship and what they can do to fight it. I’m honored to lead Banned Books Week 2023.”

The Wonder of Small Things
Do you know about the poetry anthologies edited by James Crews and published by Storey Publishing? They’re wonderful little gems of gentle poems. The latest one has just been released: The Wonder of Small Things: Poems of Peace and Renewal. Contributors include Wendell Berry, Ted Kooser, Ada Limon, Rita Dove, Joy Harjo, Michael Kleber-Diggs (a Minnesota poet!), and many others.
From Crews website:
James Crews, editor of two best-selling poetry anthologies, How to Love the World and The Path to Kindness, presents an all-new collection of highly accessible poems on the theme of celebrating moments of wonder and peace in everyday life. As Crews writes in the introduction: "[A] deep love for the world is present in every one of the poems gathered in this book. Wonder calls us back to the curiosity we are each born with, and it makes us want to move closer to what sparks our attention. Wonder opens our senses and helps us stay in touch with a humbling sense of our own human smallness in the face of unexpected beauty and the delicious mysteries of life on this planet."
In Poetry News
Bluest Nude by Ama Codjoe is the winner of the Academy of American Poets 2023 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. This $25,000 prize recognizes the most outstanding book of poetry published in the United States in the previous year.
The judges’ citation from Shane McCrae, January Gill O’Neill, and Monica Youn reads:
“Bluest Nude stands as a remarkable testament to Codjoe’s mastery of language, as she weaves words into intricate tapestries of imagery and emotion. Her ability to intertwine the personal with universal themes demonstrates a keen understanding of the human condition, inviting readers to connect with the heartbeats in her poems. With this book, Ama Codjoe arrives fully formed, as only the strongest poets do. [. . .] With every carefully crafted line, Codjoe challenges conventions, disrupts expectations, and expands the boundaries of poetic expression.”
