My Own Lightning
Lauren Wolk
My Own Lightning is the sequel to Wolf Hollow. The year is 1944. The place is Western Pennsylvania. Annabelle is heading home for the summer after helping her teacher clean the schoolhouse when a storm hits. Lightning grazes her and knocks her out cold. Someone, she doesn't know who, revives her. The lightning strike gives Annabelle greater awareness of her surroundings and the happenings around her. In time this awareness becomes less intense but doesn't entirely fade away. Summer brings new people and mysterious events. While out looking for her brother's missing dog, Annabelle reunites with her neighbor Andy Woodbury, someone who has caused her great pain in the past. She also gets to know some new neighbors. It is a summer filled with questions and conflicting feelings as Annabelle tries to make sense of the past and the present. In the end, Annabelle decides that she needs to be her own lightning. Rather than judging people by their actions, she now believes there is more to someone than what they do. Annabelle is determined to be more aware and to look more closely. My Own Lightning is a compelling coming-of-age story recommended for readers ages ten and up. |

The Patron Thief of Bread
Lindsay Eagar
As an infant, eight-year-old Duck was rescued from a river by a band of street urchins who call themselves the Crowns. In a setting that’s vaguely medieval France, the Crowns are always on the move—until they come to the city of Odierne and settle into an abandoned half constructed cathedral. The Crowns’ leader, a shifty boy named Gnat, decides to apprentice Duck to the local baker. His plan is that Duck can pilfer bread and coins for the group. As Duck settles in, she blossoms under the matronly baker’s care, and struggles with conflicting loyalties and an unfolding sense of her own selfhood. The story is told from two viewpoints—that of Duck and a gargoyle on the roof of the cathedral. It’s a lovely story of redemption, found family, and staying true to oneself. |
