Our Lake LodgeRegistration Now Open for Fall Retreats!
October 7 to 9 and October 14 to 16

Our fall retreats are a chance to get away for a relaxing week-end, talking about books with a great group of women, eating food someone else has prepared, all at a leisurely pace. We’ll all read the same three books (titles and theme to come.)

Discussion from aboveIdentical retreats will be held October 7 to 9 and 14 to 16. Last year’s retreats filled up very quickly, and we had a waiting list.

We encourage you to register now with a $50 deposit. (Non-refundable unless we fill your spot.)

Report from Night In

Thanks to all who participated in this year’s Night In—an event like no other Night In before, thanks to the pandemic. We had three identical presentations in the store and one via ZOOM. Masks and vaccination cards, but no refreshments. What was the same was the great turnout, and sharing books with readers. Below are the books we presented. Jen and Sally’s reviews will be printed in this issue of the newsletter and the next. (Some of the reviews have run in the newsletter before, in slightly different form.) We’re stocked up on the books we sold out of, so all these books are available in the store, as well as on our online store, shop.beagleandwolf.com

The Family Chao
Lan Samantha Chang

From the publisher:

The residents of Haven, Wisconsin, have dined on the Fine Chao Restaurant’s delicious Americanized Chinese food for 35 years. When the patriarch is found dead—presumably murdered—his sons find they’ve drawn the gaze of the entire town. The ensuing trial brings to light potential motives for each of the three brothers. The book brims with heartbreak, comedy, and suspense.

This book releases February 1.

Moon Witch Spider King
Marlon James

TIm's review:

Moon Witch Spider King is the second book of Marlon James' Dark Star Trilogy. The first was Black Leopard, Red Wolf, and after reading that, I was curious to see how James would continue the story of this epic quest. What he's done is to tell the same story, but seen from the perspective of one of the other characters. Seriously, I was nearly a third of the way through the book before I realized it wasn't an entirely different story. The depth of the character development is so detailed that it 'is' a different story. Equally detailed are the descriptions of people, places, customs, all the while the reader becomes aware of the common threads of human greatness as well as failures. Frankly, what interested me most were the ways characters coped with their past hurts and losses, yet strove to be better. I also need to mention the wealth of Afro-centric myth and magic in these books. Easily as detailed as Game of Thrones, or the Tolkein series.... but different. An excellent, excellent read.

The book will be released February 15 and is available to pre-order now.

Duino Elegies
Rainer Maria Rilke
Deluxe Edition

The original English translation of Rainer Maria Rilke's landmark poetry cycle, by Vita and Edward Sackville-West, reissued for the first time in 90 years.

Honestly, I’m most anticipating the second book on the list above. These are fun, short (of course! haiku!) poems written by comedians that seem perfectly timed for the I’m-So-Tired-Of-Winter season. Additionally, all author proceeds go towards Comedy Gives Back, a nonprofit that provides mental health, medical, and crisis support resources for comedians.
