Paws for Poetry

Yin Mountain: The Immortal Poetry of Three Daoist Women

This book is the work of three Tang Dynasty Daoist women poets,
translated by Rebecca Nie and Peter Levitt.

This beautiful collection is supplemented with history of the time and of the poets and includes the original Chinese characters of the poems. The poems are short and flow so smoothly you would never know a translator was involved (which of course is the sign of a good translator). The topics are both universal (love, aging, spirituality, nature) and representative of the time in which these women lived. Below is one of the poems included in the collection:

Untalented and sickly,

I ring the dragon bell of age,

yet my hollow, undeserving name

has reached the emperor.

Glancing up, I humbly place my ceremonial headpiece

     over my graying hair,

and with regret, wipe the mirror clear

     to fix my fading complexion

This would make a beautiful gift!
