Wild River
Rodman Philbrick

Five middle school students and their two counselors head out on a white-water rafting trip in the Montana wilderness. They know that they’re in for an adventure, but when the dam breaks on their first night out, it’s the beginning of more of an adventure than they could have imagined. The kids find themselves on their own. Their counselors did not make it. They must draw on all their resources as they deal with hunger, finding shelter, adverse weather conditions, and other challenges. Wild River is an intense and fast paced story. It’s not only about surviving a wilderness disaster, it’s about relationships, problem solving, and personal strengths and weaknesses. I would recommend Wild River to any Middle Grade reader looking for an exciting story.

Even Goats Need Closure

Jane Donovan and Holly Trechter

This book, a murder mystery, is about a 16-year-old girl named Theo who just moved from Chicago to her family’s small town Minnesota fishing resort. Right as she and her family arrive, they discover a dead body in one of the cabins. Since her family moved to a small town, word traveled fast, and rumors were spread immediately. While trying to adapt to her new location, Theo keeps finding more and more dead bodies in the area. Theo is not only struggling with trying to find the serial killer behind this, but also with her parents’ divorce. The reason I decided to pick up the book, was because the cover had a goat with sunglasses on it, which made me laugh. I am so glad I decided to turn the book over and read the description on the back. That is what really grabbed my attention. I would recommend this book to anyone of the ages 15 and up, because I think that those would be the ages to relate to the book’s main character the most. I would give this book a 9/10 rating! My only reasoning for it not being 10/10 is that the beginning is a little slow, but shortly after a few of the chapters it starts to get really interesting!
