Cascade at Halloween 2018

Trick or Treat Downtown

For many years, trick or treating at downtown businesses has a been a Park Rapids’ tradition. Last year, because of COVID, bags of candy were handed out at a central location. A decision will be made about this year on October. 6. It will be announced by local businesses and on social media. Whether local businesses hand out candy or it’s done from a central location, the event will be October 30, since Halloween is on Sunday, when many businesses aren’t open.

It’s been 20 years since the founding of Beagle Books, and we’re celebrating all year long! On the 20th of each month, we’ll give away a bag stuffed with books and bookish swag. Enter every time you’re in the store, no purchase necessary. If you can’t get in, email Sally to enter. These are the only two ways to enter the drawing. (Note: prize bags must be picked up as we are unable to mail them. We will hold them, however.)

Our New Web Site

It took WAY too long, but our new web site is up and running! You can access it from our web site, or go directly to shop.beagleandwolf.com.

The new web site isn’t quite done yet—we’re slowly adding all the inventory we have in the store. As you can imagine, that will take a while, but in the meantime, we are processing orders.

As before, you can pick up your purchase in the store or we’ll mail it to you.

Paws for Poetry

A Cluster of Noisy Planets
Charles Rafferty

Greetings

I counted the water towers, I counted the active smokestacks.
These were the breadcrumbs I thought would lead me back. Now
I know it’s possible to drive so far we forget why we left, that the
journey continues even after the car breaks down. I used to think
I had no message, but the message is me—bloodshot and hungry,
spilled coffee down the front of my shirt. People of the future,
gather round. I have traveled through ink to greet you.

"Greetings" from A Cluster of Noisy Planets, © 2021 by Charles Rafferty, BOA Editions, Ltd.

The poem "Greetings" is how the reader is, well, greeted in the collection A Cluster of Noisy Planets. It’s also a preview of the style/essence of the poet: short, blocky poems that often include humor and reference ordinary experiences and yet, convey the depth of meaning in the everyday. Many of the poems involve nature, especially water. The poems in this collection are little nuggets—I’d love to have one in my pocket every day and delight strangers with an impromptu reading.

(A big THANK YOU to the publisher for permission to reprint "Greetings"!)

Note: Greetings will be released on October 5.

A Dangerous Place
Chelsea B. DesAutels

The most noticeable thing about the poems in this collection is the way the poet sets the pace. There are poems that are frenetic, some feel like a steady gait, and others are like a slow walk sprinkled with pauses. As a reader, I appreciate this. As someone who is interested in the craft of writing, how the placement of words on a page matters, I’m in awe. The pace of the poems in this collection is as varied as the content of the poems: cancer, family, nature, religion, place (notably Minnesota vs Texas), love, and grief. To get your own teaser, go to: theadroitjournal.org/issue-thirty-two/chelsea-b-desautels-poetry/ and hear the poet read two of the poems included in this collection.

Then do yourself a favor and order your own copy of A Dangerous Place.

Note: this book will be released October 19.
