Cascade

Introducing Cascade

We’re excited that beginning this month, one of our customers/friends will be contributing regularly to the newsletter! Here is Cascade, in her own words:

My name is Cascade; I am 13 years old. I was born in Portland, Oregon (Ore-gun, not Ore-gone) where I lived for 3 years. Then I lived in Billings, Montana until I was 5. I moved to Park Rapids on October 31, 2006. I am unschooled (non-curriculum based homeschooling). I love dance, Taekwondo, drama/theatre, art, and piano; these are my "extra-curricular" activities. I am on the Park Rapids senior dance team. I also enjoy our family dog (Sam), walking, hiking, camping, backpacking, biking, canoeing, puzzles, games, arts & crafts, and hanging out with friends and family.

I am totally a bibliophile—my room is a library.

Here are recommendations from Cascade.

book

Rain Reign
by Ann M. Martin

This is a book of stellar homophones/homonyms--not a book to be read aloud, although my mom and I tried.  Rose Howard is a girl with high-functioning autism who purposely gave her dog a homonym name:  Rain.  Rain goes missing during a hurricane, thus sending Rose on a journey to find her lost dog.  This story has a sad but heartwarming ending.

book

Stay Alive: Crash
by Joseph Monninger

This is the first book in a series is about a crew of teens who crash in the Alaskan wilderness. The fans of Gary Paulsen's Hatchet will enjoy this book. It’s riveting; I could not put it down. We read this book as a family book and everyone enjoyed it immensely.

book
  The Island
by Gary Paulsen

We recently read this as our family book; it is the best Paulsen book we have read since Hatchet, Brian's Winter, and The River series. Shortly after moving to a rural Wisconsin area, fifteen year old Wil Neuton discovers an island and immerses himself in learning about nature.  Ultimately, this exploration teaches him more about himself and brings him closer to his dad.

book
  Strega Nona's Harvest
by Tomie dePaola

Since I was a little kid, I have loved dePaola's books.  In this book, Strega Nona is preparing her fall harvest and Big Anthony wants to help. Then he uses the leftover seeds to plant his own garden, but he is not as neat and ends up with a big snarl of vegetables.  Another good Strega Nona book…

book
  Autumn Falls
by Bella Thorne

After Autumn's dad dies, she moves to a new town which means a new school and new friends. On the first day of school, she meets many challenges; she is targeted by the most popular girl in school because the popular girl's crush shows interest in Autumn. Shortly after school starts, she visits her elderly grandmother in a nursing home and her grandmother gives Autumn a blank journal which her dad meant to give her before he died. The journal is magical and brings Autumn many hardships. I really liked this book; it was fun, magical, and slightly romantic.
