Olivia's Book Group

When Olivia, the six-year old daughter of staff member Jamie, recently started a book group for her friends, we turned to our Random House children’s rep for some book suggestions. In exchange for the girl’s feedback, they each received an advance copy of Mermaids in the Backyard by Catherine Hapka, which will be released in June. Thanks to Random House for their support of this group of young readers!

Mermaids in the BackyardHere’s the group’s reaction to the book:

"The mermaids were pretty and they had purple tails. They were beautiful and colorful. In the middle, the book was sad because the little seahorse was taken away from the boy. Lindy is worried about the seahorse so she returns it to the mermaids. We liked the book because the mermaids were cute!"

Jamie adds: "The book is Mom Approved! It’s a cute story with cute illustrations."

Another staff daughter (Jen’s) also recommends a book:

"11 Birthdays is my fav because it's funny, mysterious, and awesome. I was glued to it when I was reading it. (for real) I hope you enjoy reading it." Megan is 11. The author of 11 Birthdays is Wendy Mass.

Staff members are also reading kid’s books! Our new favorite is Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made by Stephan Pastis.

Lacy says: "This was such a cute book! The recommended ages for this book are 8-12 but, as an adult, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The main character, Timmy Failure, runs his own "detective agency" and has a pet polar bear named Total. Total is his business partner and so Timmy has decided to name his agency Total Failure, but assures us not to be fooled by the name because his detective agency is quite possibly the best in the nation. I loved the humor and the illustrations in this book, and am eagerly awaiting the next installment."

Jen says:  "This is a fun new series about a boy who creates an international crime-solving business. Timmy is long on confidence and short on skill. His obliviousness is endearing (except maybe to his mother). My favorite page of this illustrated young adult book depicts the local librarian, dressed like a biker (as in motorcycle) dude, reading Emily Dickinson. This book is for both kids and their parents."
