The best of 2012 chilren's literature
On January 28, the American Library Association named the winners of the Newbery and Caldecott medals, the top awards in children’s literature.
The Newbery medal, awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children, went to Katherine Applegate, the author of The One and Only Ivan. It's a touching fictional story about Ivan, a real-life silverback gorilla who lived for years in a cage in a circus-themed mall before moving to the Atlanta Zoo in 1994.
The Caldecott Medal, which honors the best illustrated children’s book, went to This Is Not My Hat, written and illustrated by Jon Klassen. It's the story of a little fish who tries to get away with the small, blue hat belonging to a slumbering big fish. The story is told through subtle eye movements and the tilt of seaweed and air bubbles.
