Coneflower

We blinked, and town is full of people, there are flowers everywhere, and our calendar is full!
Join us for some or all of the fun activities we have planned for July. See the details below,
and watch how the events unfold on our Facebook page.

Farewell to our friend!
Thursday, July 3, 3:00 to 5:00

We will be hosting a farewell party for our longtime staffer Cascade in the Addition of the bookstore.

Cascade has worked for us in a number of capacities (intern, Wenda (Waldo character), reviewer, bookseller, and so much more!) She’s heading to Madison to attend grad school for Library Science. It’s been our great pleasure to have been part of Cascade’s journey. We’re proud of her and excited for her future!

Please join us on the 3rd!!

Waldo Waving   “Find Waldo in Park Rapids” is back again in July!

A 6" Waldo standee will be hiding in each of 20 different places in Park Rapids this month. Pick up a stamp card at the first participating location you visit and then start looking! When you find Waldo at participating locations, get your stamp card stamped/signed. The first 125 players who collect store stamps/signatures from at least ten different businesses and turn their passports in to the bookstore will receive a sticker and a $1 Off coupon for a Waldo book. Players who collect at least eighteen stamps/signatures are also entered into a drawing on July 31 for the grand prize. And keep your eyes open for Waldo and Wenda. You never know when they’ll show up around town! Here are the participating businesses. Most, but not all, are located downtown.

Summer wouldn’t be complete with a visit from Frank Weber. Frank is a forensic pathologist whose books are drawn on actual cases he’s worked on in Minnesota. Come in to chat, to ask Frank about his day job, and to get a signed copy of his latest thriller, The Sun.

Lunch with Peter Geye
book coverJuly 19, 11:30

Peter Geye’s latest book, A Lesser Light, is historical fiction set at Split Rock Lighthouse! Join us for lunch with Peter and hear about his inspiration for writing the book, as well as his process—and ask him any questions you may have. We’ll be in the party room at the Good Life Café for this ticketed event. Cost will be $20 and will include lunch and a presentation by Peter. Books will be available for sale—and if you’ve already purchased one from us, you’re welcome to bring it along to be signed. Tickets will be available at the store.

Here's a link to an interview Peter did in May (it’s not a spoiler—he’ll have different things to say to us.)

Free Park & Ride

Ifyou want to shop, dine, and take in 2nd St. Stage Downtown, but don't want to drive around looking for a parking spot, the Downtown Business Association (which we're part of) has a solution. The Heartland Express bus will pick you up and bring you back to the CHI St. Joseph's Health parking lot at South Main Avenue and 8th Street. Hint: we're open until 5:30, so you'll want to stop in at the bookstore first!

Nora

Introducing Nora

Nora, our summer intern, is our newest staff member. She’s a reader (of course!), a freshman at Nevis School, and active in drama. Currently her favorite author is Emily Henry.

You might not SEE a lot of Nora.....a lot of the work we have her doing keeps her downstairs off the sales floor (it's nice and cool down there!) but if you do see her in the bookstore, say HI!

A Rebellion of Care
David Gate

David Gate's debut collection of poetry, A Rebellion of Care, is due out July 15. From the publisher: "A Rebellion of Care is a moving manifesto in poems and essays, inviting readers to embrace their humanity and live fully alive in our age of social change, hyper-capitalism, and pervasive loneliness." Here is a very small sample of Gate's work:

yes, everyone is struggling right now
so please be gracious

be kind & patient, but subvert
every institution that relies on our suffering

The first poem in the collection is titled "A Manifesto for a Rebellion of Care" and sets up the reader for the rest of the collection, which is the encouragement you need right now (even if you don't know you need it.) These are poems for the folks that think they don't read poetry because they don't get it—you'll get these, I promise, and you'll feel better for having read them. Hopefully you'll share them with someone else who will feel better and so on and so forth. If I still haven't convinced you to give this collection a read, check out the poet's website to get a sense of who he is.

P.S. Once I do convince you........make sure you read the author's introduction to the collection.

America's Test Kitchen 25th Anniversary Cookbook
America’s Test Kitchen

Welcome back to Cookbook Corner!  Today's selection is America's Test Kitchen 25th Anniversary Cookbook. This book is loaded with great recipes—500 to be exact! It’s the ultimate culinary education from the longest running TV food show.  This book is amazing! I consider it up there with The Joy of Cooking, which is my go-to cookbook. It has recipes for everything from Sloppy Joes to ribs to vegetarian recipes.

I really love this cookbook!
