Jane Payne

Kent Nerburn, speaking and signing
June 5, 7:00 (doors open at 6:30)

Jane PayneWe are thrilled to welcome Kent Nerburn back to Beagle and Wolf Books with his new book,Lone Dog Road!Nerburn’s writings have focused on the Native American people with whom he has lived and worked for 30 years. Native leaders like Leonard Peltier and Winona LaDuke have named him “one of the few American writers who can successfully bridge the gap between Native and non-Native cultures.” Lakota author and elder Joseph Marshall has called his work "a sensitive, insightful glimpse into a Lakota soul, a feat unattainable by most non-Native writers."

In Lone Dog Road, Nerburn carries his skill of empathic storytelling further by bringing together a rich tapestry of people from different races and cultures who speak in their own individual voices to tell a compelling road story of two young Lakota boys, ages 11 and 6, who are fleeing from a government agent who has been sent to take the younger boy to an Indian boarding school.

Come to hear Kent talk about the writing of this new book, and to purchase a signed copy.

See Sally's review.

3rd St. Festival
June 21, 1:00 to 5:00 (Rain or Shine!)

Author Fest, our annual celebration of Minnesota writers, is getting a new name, time of day, location, and a broader focus. It will be 3rd St. Festival, 1:00 to 5:00 on June 21, smack dab in the middle of 3rd St.!

The event will remain a great chance to visit with authors, meet new authors, and purchase signed books.

Our friends at Studio 176 will be on the street as well, with a gorgeous variety of art under a tent. We expect other 3rd Street businesses to join us as well.

Beams of Abundance

Karen Babine

Join us in welcoming Katrina Carrier to our staff for the summer!

When we asked Katrina to describe herself as a reader, this is how she responded: “I think I was born with a book in my hand. From reading Dr. Seuss books and Harold and the Purple Crayon, to devouring The Boxcar Children and Sweet Valley High, and then graduating to Nancy Drew and Pride and Prejudice, my love for books has only grown over time. I read almost anything, and rarely does a day go by without me reading. I’m excited to be joining the staff at Beagle Books and Wolf Books & Bindery, where I will get to spend my days talking about books.”

Haiku: Japanese Poems for the Four Seasons.
Ornella Civardi, author; Kaori Yamaguchi, Illustrator

A beautiful book of haiku was released the end of May .

I was first drawn to the book's construction—it's bound using the Japanese Stab Stitch. The book is made of a somewhat delicate paper but fear not—it also comes with a matching, sturdy, beautiful slipcase. Inside, seasonal poems are presented in both English and Japanese, with illustrations, and bubbles of side notes (for Gen Xers, think of VH1's Pop-Up Video).

The collection is beautiful and would make a great gift (gifting yourself a book counts )

Billy Collins alert!

A new collection will be released in November, Dog Show.

I don't mean to brag but I can't help think the cover of this forthcoming book is a wink or a nod to us at Beagle and Wolf Books ;)

Kitchens of Hope:
Immigrants Share Stories of Resilience and Recipes from Home

Welcome back to Cookbook Corner! This month’s selection is Kitchens of Hope: Immigrants Share Stories of Resilience and Recipes from Home.

While immigrants to the United States bring hope for the future, they also bring memories from the past, many tied to food. Kitchens of Hope brings together such memories from people from more than thirty countries, offering a glimpse into their kitchens and insight into their lives. This book is a celebration of people and cuisines from around the world.

Learn the circumstances of these people coming to the U.S. and over 50 recipes they brought with them: recipes like curry, borscht, pho, pita, and more. Check it out!!

Note: this book will be released June 17.
