May 1, 4:00

Allen EskensAllen Eskens, who has many fans at the store, will be with us to talk about his latest book, The Quiet Librarian.

This is outstanding historical fiction, with chapters alternating between Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Minnesota. It’s also an excellent mystery and thriller.

Note that this is a rare weekday event for us.

Karen Babine Karen Babine
May 17, 1:00 to 3:00

book coverBook Launch of The Allure of Elsewhere

Join us in welcoming Nevis native Karen Babine home and celebrating the release of her newest book!

In her mid-thirties and happily single, Karen hitches up her tiny Scamp camper and sets out with her two unenthusiastic cats, Galway and Maeve, on a journey from her home in Minnesota to Nova Scotia to explore the place where her French-Acadian ancestors settled in North America some four centuries ago.

Capturing the joy, freedom, and powerful pull of the open road, The Allure of Elsewhere is about the stories we’re told, the stories we tell, and the way those stories make us who we are, often in surprising ways. Intimate, curious, and candid, written with wry wit and warmth, this is a courageous and inspiring memoir.

This is a scoop for us as the official release date of Karen’s book is May 20!

From the publisher: “…these compassionate poems of connection and affirmation are a celebration of all kinds of love-romantic, family, friendship, self-love, and love for nature. The poems are gathered from a diverse group of contemporary writers, both allied and part of the LGBTQIA+ community, with a special focus on queer, nonbinary, and transgender poets."

Danez Smith

In April, Danez Smith won the Minnesota Book Award for Poetry, (his second) for his latest collection, Bluff.

“Written after two years of artistic silence, during which the world came to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Minneapolis became the epicenter of protest following the murder of George Floyd, Bluff is Danez Smith’s powerful reckoning with their role and responsibility as a poet and with their hometown of the Twin Cities. This is a book of awakening out of violence, guilt, shame, and critical pessimism to wonder and imagine how we can strive toward a new existence in a world that seems to be dissolving into desolate futures.”
Bluff, as well as Smith’s earlier poetry, is on our shelves now.
