Can I Be Your Dog?
Troy Cummings

My new favorite picture book arrived in the bookstore recently. Arfy is a dog in need of a home. He writes letters to prospective homes in hopes of being adopted. Unfortunately, the replies he receives are rejections. The letters are clever and fun (and ok, sometimes a little desperate, but who wouldn’t be after so many rejections?). I love the artwork, but best of all is the ending which I doubt you’ll see coming and I’m not about to spoil for you.

My Pet Wants a Pet
Elise Broach

A little boy wanted something of his own to take care of, and his mother reluctantly agreed to a dog. Soon, the dog wanted something of his own to take care of, and the mother even more reluctantly agreed to a cat. Of course, the cat wanted something to take care of as well, and on it went, with the mother getting more exasperated with each addition. Kids and adults alike will love this book, and the surprise ending.

I Survived the Children’s Blizzard, 1888
Lauren Tarshis

Lauren Tarshis did it again with her newest I Survived book! She tells of the blizzard in 1888 that left many school children stranded. The main character had just moved to the Dakota Territory from Chicago. Tarshis writes of his courage and quick thinking, saving the lives of two new friends. She gives her readers insight into overcoming challenges and becoming better people.

The Plot to Kill Hitler
Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Spy, Unlikely Hero

Patricia McCormick

How did a mild, meek, quiet minister become part of the conspiracy to kill Adolph Hitler, the German Fuhrer? This book, intended for readers ages 10 to 13, chronicles the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer from boyhood to becoming a pastor and then a spy working with others to overthrow Hitler. This book was a great introduction to Bonhoeffer, and compels me to learn more about who he was and what he believed.
