July 22

Frank Weber was in the store to sign copies of Murder Book. (Murder book is a term for a cold case where a homicide is suspected.)

Jon Frederick spent his adolescence protecting his mentally ill brother and worrying about his parents' farm as it headed toward bankruptcy. So when Mandy Baker, the alluring new girl in town, pursued him, he was easily enamored. But on the day he ended their relationship, Mandy vanished. There is no doubt in the small Minnesota town of Pierz that the flirtatious girl is dead, and there is little doubt that Jon got away with murder. A decade later, Jon is made an investigator with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. While investigating a case near his hometown, he quietly reopens the murder book on Mandy Baker and begins to see commonalities between Mandy's disappearance and his new case. As the investigation intensifies, Jon realizes he has crossed paths with the killer before.

Frank Weber is a forensic psychologist.

Independent Bookstore Day logo
Independent Bookstore Day display Independent Bookstore Day
April 29

We LOVE the last Saturday in April—it’s a one-day national party that takes place at indie bookstores across the country.

Independent bookstores are not just stores, they’re community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent. Our celebration included live music from Debbie Center, kids making slime with Dr. Bob, book signings by Michael Meuers (Road to Ponemah) and Barry Babcock (Teachers in the Forest), exclusive merchandise, door prizes, free coffee with purchase of a  Beagle and Wolf mug, handmade by a local artist, birthday cake (we’re celebrating 2 years as Beagle and Wolf), a free book with every purchase, and free audiobooks!

bookThe Week of the Young Child™
April 27

This is an annual celebration of early learning, young children, their teachers, and families. Park Rapids businesses hosted special activities for young children throughout the week of April 24 to 28. We hosted an interactive storytime based on the new children’s book The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors.

Taking the show on the road!

April 22

We were a vendor at the 16th annual United for Children Conference in Park Rapids. We’ll have the latest in games, toys, and books for young children. More information about the event. And do let us know if you’re interested in us coming to your event. We also visit book groups to do customized book talks.

Jewel of the NorthwoodsSpring Reading Retreat
April 1

The Jewel of the Northwoods is the home of our retreats where we discuss books, eat great food, and relax with new and old friends. This retreat explored the ways women and girls have overcome obstacles with two books as a jumping off point for conversation.

bookThe Girl Who Drank the Moon, by Minnesota author Kelly Barnhill, is a young adult book and the winner of this year’s Newbery prize. It’s the story of a young girl raised by a bookwitch, a swamp monster, and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon who must unlock the dangerous magic buried deep inside. It’s a book which is impossible to put down!

Our second book was Mothering Sunday by Graham Swift. The story, which is set in England, takes place on March 30, 1924, although it does flash forward. It’s been called a feminist Cinderella story, set just after the Downton Abbey era.

Annual Chili Challenge!

bookMarch 8

Organizations from all over town served up chili as a fundraiser for the Hubbard County Food Shelf. Jen and Bob (who volunteers at the Food Shelf) served our concoction, “Extremely Mild & Incredibly Meatless.” A tip of the hat to Jonathan Safran Foer, the author of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close! Our recipe came from Simple Vegetarian Pleasures.
